April is typically one of the best months of the year to see Hocking Hills' waterfalls running strong. Spring rain usually keeps them flowing well, woodland wildflowers like trillium and spring beauty are typically emerging on the forest floor, and the tree canopy is still mostly open, so more light reaches the gorges than at almost any other time of year. Trails can be muddy in shaded, low-lying spots — more so early in the month than late — but conditions are generally far more settled and predictable than March. Bring waterproof boots and a rain layer, and you'll typically have an easy, rewarding trip.

What Hocking Hills Is Like in April
April is spring's real arrival in Hocking Hills. The unpredictable freeze-thaw swings and lingering ice of March give way to a steadier warming trend, even though the weather can still turn on you within a single day. What sets April apart is what's happening on the forest floor and in the gorges: wildflowers are coming up before the tree canopy fills in and shades them out, and the waterfalls — fed by spring rain and snowmelt runoff earlier in the month — are running at some of their strongest flow of the year.
Early April still looks closer to late winter than summer: trees are mostly bare or just budding, so the gorges feel open and sunlit. By the end of the month, a visible haze of green has returned to the canopy. Trail conditions follow a similar arc — expect mud in shaded, low spots and around boardwalk approaches early in the month, drying out and firming up as April progresses. Crowds are generally light compared to May and summer, though nice weekends and the Easter holiday bring a noticeable uptick.

Seasonal Conditions in April
Waterfalls are one of April's headline draws. Spring rain and the tail end of snowmelt generally keep flow strong at Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, and Conkles Hollow — this is one of the better windows of the year to see them at real volume, before the drier stretch of summer thins them out. Wildflowers are the other reason to visit this month: woodland species like trillium, spring beauty, Dutchman's breeches, bloodroot, trout lily, and Virginia bluebells typically bloom on the forest floor in April, taking advantage of sunlight that reaches the ground before the canopy leafs out.
Mud is the main trail condition to plan around, particularly in the first half of the month and after rain — shaded, low-lying sections and boardwalk approaches hold water longest. It steadily improves as April goes on, and by comparison to March it's a much more settled, predictable month with far less risk of ice or snow. Daylight is lengthening quickly, giving you more usable hiking hours than in winter or early spring.
Where to Explore in April
Old Man's Cave
Old Man's Cave is the strongest April pick in the park: its stream-fed gorge means the waterfalls here run especially well on spring rain, and the mix of sun-exposed rim trail and shaded lower gorge gives you both good wildflower spotting and reliable water views in one hike. Expect mud on the lower gorge trail early in the month. See the full Old Man's Cave trail guide for trail sections, parking, and timing.
Conkles Hollow
Conkles Hollow's narrow, steep-walled gorge is at its best in April — the seasonal waterfall at the end of the rim trail is running well, and the gorge floor trail is a good spot for spring wildflowers before the canopy closes in overhead. See the full Conkles Hollow trail guide for the rim vs. gorge trail breakdown and accessibility details.

Is April a good time to visit Hocking Hills?
Yes. April is one of the better shoulder-season months — waterfalls typically run strong from spring rain, wildflowers are usually emerging on the forest floor, and trails are generally far less crowded than they'll be by May. Are trails muddy in Hocking Hills in April?
