Hocking Hills in November: Weather, Events & Things to Do

Bare trees, open overlook views, and quiet trails once October's crowds clear out

November suits a Hocking Hills trip focused on gorge scenery, shorter walks and indoor breaks. Do not plan around peak fall color: remaining leaves vary, and bare branches become part of the view. Prepare for cold or wet conditions and less daylight than in summer.

Is November right for your group?

Weather, daylight and what to pack

Check the local National Weather Service forecast for your dates instead of treating a monthly average as a packing list. Bring warm layers, a rain shell, hat, gloves and footwear with grip. Wet leaves, frost and ice can change the difficulty of a short route. Keep spare dry clothes in the car.

Check sunset before choosing an afternoon walk and allow time to reach the car before dark. Carry a small light for delays, not as a reason to extend the plan. Follow posted opening hours and closures.

Choose one main outing

Ash Cave: a shorter approach

The lower paved gorge approach is approximately a quarter mile to the cave area. The rim route involves steps and unpaved ground, and the cave floor can be sandy. For mixed mobility, plan the approach and return before starting; check for ice or closures. Our Ash Cave guide shows the surfaces.

Conkle’s Hollow: choose gorge or rim

The gorge’s paved section is different from the exposed rim route. The sidewalk ends before the full gorge trail does. A bare canopy does not make a rim hike suitable for someone uncomfortable with heights, stairs or slippery ground. Read the route comparison. No pets are allowed in this preserve.

Old Man’s Cave: for comfortable stair walkers

Use our family video and terrain guide to judge the steps and uneven ground. Choose the entire signed route, including the climb out. Leave enough energy and daylight for that return.

A November day without rushing

Suggested plan: one morning walk and a warm lunch, with the afternoon left flexible. This sequence is not a fixed tour or a promise of current opening hours.

  1. Before departure: check weather and park notices, download directions and pack water and snacks. If surfaces are icy or weather unsuitable, start with the indoor alternative below.
  2. Morning: choose Ash Cave’s paved approach or Old Man’s Cave according to the group’s comfort with steps. Use the official map to identify parking and restrooms; check facility availability before leaving the trailhead.
  3. Lunch: if your route takes you toward Logan, TheFeed at 428 E. Front Street offers a menu and table reservations. Check opening hours and seating before building the drive around it. Include a restroom break and time to warm up.
  4. Afternoon: choose the children’s museum in Logan for younger children, or a prebooked escape game for teens and adults. Our indoor options include addresses and official links. A second walk is optional only if conditions, energy and daylight allow.

If you prefer staying near the trails, bring a picnic and keep the indoor stop for another day. Do not add a drive to Logan merely to follow this itinerary.

November 2026 dates to check

Fall train rides: November 1

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway lists November 1 alongside its October fall excursions. The ride is approximately two hours from Nelsonville; allow the operator’s check-in time and reserve the appropriate ticket. Wheelchair capacity is limited and requires advance arrangements. Check departures, tickets and boarding instructions. This does not mean fall trains run throughout November.

Hunting-season planning

Ohio’s 2026 youth deer-gun dates are November 21–22; the regular statewide gun week starts November 30 and runs through December 6. Thanksgiving Day is November 26, so the regular gun week starts after Thanksgiving, not during the holiday itself. Archery and other seasons have their own dates.

These statewide dates do not mean hunting is allowed on every park trail. Check the specific land manager’s rules and maps for your destination, remain on designated routes and consider high-visibility clothing where hunting is permitted. Official Ohio deer-season rule.

For additional events, use the regional event calendar and confirm with the organizer. Check holiday hours directly before relying on a restaurant or attraction.

Plan your arrival

Our family tip: download your map before you go. Cell reception can be unreliable in Hocking Hills. We learned this the hard way: download an offline Google map while you still have Wi-Fi or a cell signal. Download an area that covers your whole drive, including the way back to where you are staying, and wait for the download to finish. Simply saving a place or opening directions is not the same as downloading an offline map. How to download a Google map for offline use. Offline maps support driving directions within the downloaded area; live traffic and walking directions are unavailable offline. Before leaving, save the official Hocking Hills park and trail map for offline use. For trails outside this map, use the relevant preserve or park map.

Before setting out, check the National Weather Service forecast for South Bloomingville and ODNR park information and notices. Weather and trail conditions can change; check posted notices at your destination too.

Choose a stop covered in this guide to open Google Maps. Select your current location or enter a starting address to see driving directions and an estimated travel time.

Drive times vary with traffic and road conditions. Follow signs for designated visitor parking on arrival; a map route does not confirm that a trail is open or accessible.

November questions

Will we still see fall color in November?

Some leaves may remain early in the month, but do not plan a November trip around peak color. Treat the sandstone scenery, woodland and indoor activities as the main reasons to visit.

Can we visit with grandparents or someone avoiding stairs?

Plan around the paved approach at Ash Cave or the paved section of Conkle’s Hollow, with current conditions checked first. Neither description covers every surface. A warm indoor alternative gives the group an option if ice or footing changes the plan.

Are November attractions open every day?

No single schedule covers the region. Check the operator’s hours and holiday exceptions, and reserve ticketed activities. A dated train departure does not establish daily service.
